STATE WRESTLING: Basile leads Div. III after Day 1, 20 SWLA wrestlers reach semifinals

Basile leads the Division III team standings after Day 1 of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships in Bossier City and 20 Southwest La. wrestlers have reached the semifinals of their respective weight classes.

Basile has nine wrestlers in the semifinals and two more still alive in the consolation brackets.

The four-time defending state champion Bearcats have accumulated 119 points and enter the final day of the state championships 11.5 point lead on Archbishop Shaw. DeLaSalle is in third place with 96 points.

Three Southwest La. wrestlers pulled upsets to reach the semifinals

Senior Landon Thibodeaux (Basile), the No. 7 seed at 132 pounds, beat No. 2 Aydan Green (South Beauregard) 9-6 in the quarterfinals to set up a match with No. 3 Antonion Barraza (St. Michael) in the semifinals.

285-pound No. 6 Scott Berzas (Basile) upset No. 3 Christian Speight (Evangel Christian) after scoring two points in overtime to win 3-1. Berzas will face No. 2 Ryan Fobbs (Erath) in the semifinals.

Peyton Miller (Sam Houston), ranked No. 5 at 152 pounds, stunned No. 4 Chase Smart (North DeSoto) in the quarter finals, taking him down 49 seconds into the second period. Miller will take on No. 1 Hudson Sharon (Teurlings Catholic) in the semifinals.
