The Artisans’ Gallery Fall 2022 Exhibition, “Falling into Place,” will be closing on Friday, Dec.2.

It first opened on Friday, Sept. 30.

This exhibition features local art from the Artisans’ Gallery, a collective of juried local and regional professional and semi-professional artists that have curated exhibitions since 1996. According to current member Charlene Kaough, there are currently around 20 active members.

She stated that in this exhibition, patrons can expect “a very eclectic mix of original, interesting art.” She explained that there is no common theme between the featured pieces.

Charlotte LaBarbera, Artisans’ Gallery member, stated that the individual artists decide which pieces to feature. Members bring their newest work for most shows,” she said. “They bring whatever they have and we try to use everyone’s work.”

While there is no theme, Kaough said that the title of the exhibition was inspired by the natural synergy of the pieces on display.“The members who hang the show are adept at putting together harmonious and pleasing arrangements in regard to colors and subjects and media,” she said.

“At some point, everything just ‘Falls into Place.’”

The pieces feature the artistic mediums of oils, acrylic, water colors, photography, ceramics, basketry and mixed media.

Despite the contingent nature of the exhibitions, Kaough explained that the pieces are often an accurate representation of the artist and Southwest Louisiana’s culture. “The work is reflective of the local culture and interests of the individual artists and lends to the identity of the place,” she said.

She stated that the Artisans’ Gallery was formed to provide this representation. She cited the application. “The Artisans’ Gallery was created to showcase the work of Louisiana artists and crafts persons, as well as to increase public awareness and knowledge of art in the community.”

They both spoke to the importance of consuming local art. “For the people and the visitors, it is good to go to the gallery just to see the flavor of what this area looks like,” said Kaough.

LaBarbera explained that featuring local artists can positively contribute to arts appreciation in the area. “Not everyone is interested in art but many folks will go to an exhibit if they personally know the artist,” she said. “It is a great opportunity for the community to see local talent.”

“It’s great to support your local artists and art community,” said Kaough.

Nearly all of the art on display is for sale. The quality of the pieces on display is assured through the Artisans’ Gallery membership, as all artists are vetted before being admitted. “Local artists apply for membership with samples of their work and the Standards Committee in the Artisans Gallery reviews the work and makes a determination if the work meets the criteria of the membership as established in the Artisans’ Gallery By-Laws,” said LaBarbera.

Interested applicants are required to fill out an application and submit a minimum of 3 pieces of work to be considered.
