WESTLAKE — The Iowa Yellow Jackets remained perfect in District 3-3A play with a 27-0 shutout victory over the Westlake Rams Friday night.
“I’m proud of our guys and it was a total team effort with players and coaches in the win tonight,” said Iowa head coach Tommy Johns. “The coaches had a great plan coming and the kids did a great job of executing.”
The Yellow Jackets’ opening drive saw them drive the field and convert a first down on fourth-and-8 from the Rams’ 25-yard line. Cole Corbello threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Luke Guillory for a 6-0 lead with 5:46 to play in the quarter.
Iowa (6-1, 4-0) extended the lead on the first play of the second quarter when Corbello threw a 19-yard scoring strike to Jonathon Walker to take a 13-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets fumbled the ball away on their next possession with Westlake’s Josh Parr making the recovery. But the Rams couldn’t capitalize as they turned the ball over on downs at the Iowa 5 after an incomplete pass on a fourth-and-goal play.
Iowa opened the third quarter with some trickery. Ronald Young threw a halfback pass for a 63-yard touchdown score by Walker with 11:40 in the third quarter.
The Yellow Jackets again extended their lead, this time converting a fourth-down play in the fourth quarter. Corbello threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Young with 11:36 to play.
Iowa finished with 153 passing yards and 149 rushing yards. Corbello finished 7-for-12 passing with 90 yards passing and three touchdowns. Young finished with 102 rushing yards, 28 receiving yards, and he scored a touchdown rushing and passing. Walker finished with 74 yards receiving and rushed for 35 yards and scored two touchdowns.
“We made some clutch plays when we had to tonight,” Johns said. “Westlake has a really good football team and very good on defense we knew that coming in and we knew they would give us some problems. We stepped up in some crucial situations in the end and put some points on the board.”
Westlake was limited to 83 yards rushing and 37 yards passing. Brandon Jupiter finished with 52 yards on five carries but did not play in the second half.
