St. James turns back LCCP, ends Trailblazers’ two-game win streak

Kaden Williams scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to help St. James pull away from Lake Charles College Prep Friday night in a 46-27 nondistrict win.
Williams scored on runs of 10 and 65 yards in the final quarter, icing the win for the Wildcats (5-1) after the Trailblazers (3-3) made it a one-possession game early in the quarter on a Kevon Freeman touchdown run.
Freeman’s touchdown and 2-point conversion catch from Josiah Bushnell pulled the Blazers within 34-27 with 10 minutes left.
St. James responded with an eight-play, 63-yard touchdown drive. Williams accounted for each yard, with six runs and a 7-yard catch on a third-and-5 at the Wildcats 42. He capped the drive with a 10-yard score, bursting up the middle and cutting to the right to find the end zone.
The Wildcats forced a three-and-out from the Blazers. On the second play of the next drive, Williams burst through the middle and outran the Blazers for a 65-yard score to seal the win and extend the Wildcats’ winning streak to five.
The loss ended a two-game Blazers winning streak. LCCP’s defense produced a shutout in each of those games, district wins over South Beauregard and Westlake. They had no answer for St James, which ran for 292 yards and threw for 161.
Wildcats quarterback Brayden Williams completed 15 of 21 passes for 161 yards and ran for 73 yards on eight carries. Kaden Williams finished with 191 yards on 26 carries and caught two passes for 11 yards. He scored five touchdowns, all on the ground. Khai Prean made eight receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns..
The Blazers started the game in style with Elijah Garrick returning the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.
St. James seized control by scoring on each of its first three possessions to build a 21-7 lead. Kaden Williams scored on rush of 12 and 8 yards. Brayden Williams threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Prean.
The Blazers got back in the game with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Bushnell to Eric Beloney, but Kaden Williams scored on a 3-yard run with 21 seconds left in the half to extend the Wildcats’ cushion to 27-13.
Bushnell scored on a 12-yard run midway through the third quarter to get the Blazers within a score again at 27-19, but Braylen Williams and Prean connected on a 59-yard scoring pass late in the quarter.
Bushnell completed 11 of 21 passes for 149 to lead LCCP. Baloney had three receptions for 69 yards. The Blazers return to District 3-3A play next week when the host St. Louis (5-1, 3-0), which remained undefeated in district play after a 42-35 win over Westlake.
