Welsh’s toughest opponent doesn’t appear on its schedule.

Mother Nature has dealt the Greyhounds a couple of tough breaks early after being forced to cancel both their jamboree game and last week’s regular-season opener against Kinder.

The Greyhounds (0-0) hope to get a game in this week when they travel to Westlake (1-0) for a nondistrict game. Welsh played one half against Kinder before the game was called on Saturday after being postponed the night before.

Welsh head coach Cody Guerigner said he hopes his team’s experience is enough to offset the lack of game action.

“We have 18 starters back so I am not worried about being behind from the standpoint of understanding scheme or knowing what to do,” Gueringer said. “The concern is just not having those game reps since you can’t really get those in practice.”

Gueringer said he liked what he saw from his team in the portion of the Kinder game that did get played.

“Kinder came out in a different look (on defense) than we expected, but we were able to adjust to it on the fly,” he said. “Then defensively we were able to contain them pretty well. I thought we looked good.”

Gueringer said the Rams present plenty of concerns, including big-play ability running and throwing on offense.

“The running back (Brandon) Jupiter is an outstanding player,” Gueringer said. “He knows how to grind out the 2- and 3-yard runs, then hit the big play. He understands the scheme they are using up front with the blocking. The quarterback (Kevin Rideau) looked good, threw the fade route well and hit some deep balls against DeQuincy. They have guys outside that can make plays.”

Gueringer said the Rams defense has size, smarts and talent.

“Their defensive line is big, bigger than us, which you would expect from a 3A school,” he said. “They do a good job of getting penetration. The middle linebacker, (Ethan) Koonce, is an outstanding player, but they also do a lot with the two outside guys. In the secondary, Kristian Ozane has a lot of talent and plays with a lot of emotion, positive emotion. You always see him clapping for other guys that make plays.”

The Rams opened the season with a 46-12 win over DeQuincy. Jupiter ran for 106 yards and touchdown while Rideau threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns in his first varsity start. Tristan Goodly had 104 yards of offense and scored three touchdowns.
