Former Barbe High Buc and LSU Tiger Brody Drost is on the move.
He announced on social media Monday afternoon that he is transferring from LSU to Louisiana Tech.
“First off, I would like to thank my coaches, teammates and all the fans at Louisiana State University,” Drost said in his post. “These past two years, I’ve grown as not only a player but a person as well.
“With that being said, I’m extremely excited to announce that I’ve decided to finish out my athletic career at Louisiana Tech University. After several hours of conversations with my family and the coaching staff at La. Tech, I truly believe there is no better place for me.”
Drost is one of eight Tigers who entered the NCAA transfer portal this offseason
He had a solid freshman season with the Tigers in 2021, starting 20 games playing center field, left field and designated hitter. He batted .226 with 14 runs scored, three doubles, five home runs and 14 RBIs, including a two-run home run in the Knoxville super regional but in 2022 saw his playing time under new head coach Jay Johnson cut by injuries with two at-bats.
LSU lost to Southern Mississippi in the Hattiesburg super regional.
Louisiana Tech went 43-21 and won the Conference USA Tournament championship. It was the Bulldogs’ first postseason conference championship since winning the Southland Conference in 1987. The Bulldogs went 1-2 in the Austin (Texas) regional.
Drost said he is spending the summer in Florida playing for the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs in the Florida Collegiate Summer League. He is batting .303 with one home run and seven RBIs in 10 games.
Drost was named the Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year of the coronavirus-shortened 2020 prep baseball season. In nine games he batted .390 with two home runs and nine RBIs.
He led Barbe to the 2019 Class 5A state championship, earning MVP honors in the finals after almost hitting for the cycle with an RBI single and double and a three-run home run in an 8-2 win over District 3-5A rival Sam Houston.
The two-way player was named first-team all-state in 2019 with an 8-0 record, 0.98 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 43 innings. He batted .364 with seven home runs, 37 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.
