The city’s police officers and firemen could see a significant increase in pay under a proposed budget introduced Tuesday by the Jennings City Council.
A final vote on the budget is set for 5:30 p.m. June 28.
If approved, the new budget which goes into effect July 1, will include $400,000 to fund pay raises for the city’s fire and police department.
All other city employees will see a 2 percent pay raise in addition to merit based pay.
“The budget proposes a significant pay raise for all our first responders,” Mayor Henry Guinn said. “I am super excited to offer this with no tax increase to the public.”
City Financial Advisor Greg Marcantel said the base increase for police officers and firemen will be about 25 percent.
“This is the first time in several years that we have seen a raise in the entry level,” Marcantel said, noting that the increase will ripple through rankings of the Civil Service.
The pay raises will cost the city $400,000 including pay to individuals, taxes and retirement. The money is included in the proposed general fund for the next fiscal year.
“It is safe to say that every single person in both departments will see a part of this,” Marcantel said.
The Jennings Police Department currently has 36 employees and the fire department has 17 employees.
“I have been involved in the city finances for a long time and this is the single largest pay raise the city has ever been able to give to its first responders,” Marcentel said. “This is something that is important and something that the city can be proud of and it will help the departments to keep qualified people.”
Police Chief Danny Semmes thanked the mayor and council for considering the pay increase for the employees.
“I have been here for years now and this is the most significant pay raise the Jennings Police Department has ever seen,” Semmes said. “It will definitely improve the department and help us to keep good, qualified personnel.”
