Barbe repeats as state champ, St. Louis’ Anderson wins D-II boys title

The Barbe High girls golf team repeated as Division I state champions, holding on to the big lead they built on Monday to finish 13 shots ahead of runner-up Dutchtown.

The championship tournament was played at The Wetlands Golf Club in Lafayette. The Bucs owned a 12-shot lead over the Griffins entering the final day of play after opening with a 164 on Monday and avoiding drama by outplaying Dutchtown by one stroke on Tuesday, 166 to 167. The Bucs had the best team score on both days.

Sam Houston finished fifth with a score of 362.

Individually, Barbe’s Bella Bradley finished tied for fourth with a two-day total of 161, 13 shots behind winner Saral Meral of St. Scholastica. Barbe’s Bella Callaba and Emmi Monceaux of Sam Houston finished tied for eighth with a score of 169. Other top-20 finishers were Sulphur’s Lilly LeJeune (12th, 173), Barbe’s Sadie Guillory (18th, 183) and Sam Houston’s Jayden Eldridge (19th, 193).

“They persevered, struggled for a while but kept it going and were able to do what they needed to do,” Barbe head coach Bob Corley said. “Overall they played well. It took all three of them to win it, and each one of them did their job.”

Corley said the group have always risen to the occasion.

“They set a goal at the beginning of the season to be the best,” he said. “They are a hard-working group, they enjoy it and know what it takes to win.”

Guillory is the lone senior of the trio.

“She works hard, gets along with everyone and played three sports,” Corley said of Guillory. “She’s a great person.”

At the Division II state meet at Farm d’Allie in Carencro, St. Louis Catholic’s Ross Anderson won the individual title with a two-day total of 146, four shots ahead of runner-up Dax Reaux of Teurlings Catholic.

The Saints finished second in the team standings behind St. Thomas More. The Cougars won with a 624 total, four shots ahead of the Saints.

St. Louis’ George Trappey earned a 10th-place finish with a score of 157.
