- St. Louis Catholic's Kai Reinauer won his second consecutive Division III, Region 2 tennis singles title on Tuesday at the Lake Charles Racquet Club.
St. Louis Catholic remains on pace to match its six state championship haul last season.
The Saints repeated as Division III boys tennis state champions on Wednesday at Louisiana-Monroe.
St. Louis is up to three state titles this school year, including the Division II girls state basketball title in March and the Division II girls indoor track and field title in February.
The Saints will get a chance to repeat in baseball, outdoor girls track and boys golf over the next two weeks.
The Saints won the boys tennis title with 16 points. University High was the runner-up with 11.5.
“They just played extremely well,” St. Louis head coach Robert Piper said of his team. “We had six boys qualify, and they all won multiple matches.
“When you win as a team, you have to have everyone score.”
Junior Kai Reinauer led the Saints’ charge, defending his singles state championship. In five matches over two days, Reinauer outscored his opponents 60-4. He beat Episcopal’s Jacob Jones in the final 6-1, 6-1, in a rematch of last season’s semifinals. The Saints’ No. 2 singles player, Dillon Darby, reached the quarterfinals.
“(Reinauer) is quite a talent,” Piper said. “Everyone is working hard and the competition (at state) is tremendous, but Kai is a notch above.
“He takes control and never relinquishes it and it is over pretty quickly.”
Reinauer’s younger brother, Ben, and Eli Crawford defended their doubles state title. The duo faced little opposition through the first four rounds. In the final, University High’s Jackson Belcher and Dylan Rousselle pushed them in the first set, but Reinauer and Crawford held for a 6-4 win and won the second set 6-0.
“They just work really well together,” Piper said. “Eli is talented and controls the match and fires up his partner, and Ben is very capable too.”
St. Louis’ No. 2 doubles team of Kamden Watkins and Miller McFatter lost to Belcher and Rousselle in the semifinals 6-1, 6-0.
