In the final week of non-conference play, McNeese gets a chance to add a statement win to its postseason resume tonight when the Cowgirls visit LSU.

The Cowgirls (29-17) will be looking to avenge last week’s loss to the Tigers (30-17), who are ranked 21st in the USA Today/NFCA national poll.

LSU beat McNeese 7-1 last week behind a two home run performance from shortstop Taylor Pleasants.

Over the weekend, McNeese rebounded to sweep Lamar in a non-conference series, while LSU won two of three games at No. 14 Georgia, scoring 26 runs in the series.

The Tigers have scored at least seven runs in each of their last six games. At Georgia, LSU hit a total of seven homers in three games.

McNeese has won seven of its last nine games overall, allowing only 22 runs in that span. Whitney Tate has won eight straight decisions, while Ashley Vallejo has won six of her last seven, with the lone loss a complete game against LSU.

McNeese scored 21 runs in the Lamar series.

Head coach James Landreneau is hoping to get production throughout the batting order.

“We’d like to see more consistency through the lineup, one through nine,” he said. “Last week we saw it a little bit. We want to make sure it wasn’t a one week deal. The top of the order did a really good job of staying on base and the bottom of the order was able to get some timely hits.

“I want to make sure that is who we are. Consistency is the biggest thing, knowing what we are going to get. I felt that in a couple of games we gave away some at-bats. That’s not what I want to see. When we get in a bind we start trying to force hits, start chasing pitches outside of the strike zone. We want to consistently get those quality at-bats.”

Landreneau said the Tigers made the Cowgirls pay for defensive miscues and missed scoring opportunities in last week’s game.

“Our team has some regrets on mistakes we made, we’d like to get those cleaned up” he said. “When you play a high-pressure team, sometimes they will expose you. For us it is a great opportunity to go right back out there and compete against them. We’re looking forward to it.”

The Cowgirls play at UL-Monroe on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
