KINDER — Twice Kinder intentionally walked future LSU Tiger Ethan Frey Thursday night in a District 5-2A game.

It kept Frey from doing any damage at the plate, but senior Braden Trull followed each with a big hit and three RBIs to give the Eagles a 4-1 win and a share of the district title.

“The biggest play of the game was when they intentionally walked Ethan and our five-hole guy, Braden Trull, hit a double,” Rosepine head coach Jeff Smith said. “It kind of broke it open.

“He had a really great night. I am just proud of the way our guys competed. They got after it. We are really confident with Trull. He is a good hitter. He is a senior and knows how to compete, and he showed that tonight.”

Trull hit an RBI double with two outs to put the Eagles up 2-0, then added a two-run double with one out in the seventh inning and finished the day 2-for-4.

The Eagles (23-2, 8-0) extended their win streak to 19 games.

“We are playing really well right now,” Smith. “We have to win at least one of two next week to win the district title, and we look forward to getting back on the field and trying to accomplish that.”

It was a pitchers’ duel for most of the game. Frey (4-0) went 61/3 innings with 10 strikeouts and four walks. Kinder’s Landon Schmitz pitched six innings without giving up an earned run while striking out five and walking three. Casey Tilley earned the save. Frey and Tilley held Kinder (14-8, 6-2) to two hits.

“Man, we had two really good pitchers going at it. Schmitz was really good tonight,” Smith said. “He pounded the zone and made pitches when he needed to. Frey was really good. Just had two really good pitchers going at it.”

It was déjà vu for the Yellow Jackets, who lost to the Eagles by the same score on March 29.

“We left too many people on base,” Kinder head coach Rick Whittington said. “Two errors cost us. With two outs we had a routine ball that we threw away. Usually don’t do that.

“We had our opportunities. This was like a playoff game. In the playoffs in the second and third round, if you are fortunate enough to be there, you have to flush this game and get ready to play two more.

“I am proud of my kids. We have come a long way, but we’re still looking for that big hit in a game like this to win it, and we haven’t got it thus far. But it is coming.”

Lance LeBoeuf scored Kinder’s lone run in the sixth inning on an error.
