GRAND LAKE — Riley Dyson struck out 10 batters and Merryville’s jumped out to a big lead and held on to beat Grand Lake 10-5 Tuesday to stay perfect in District 4-1A.
“Our performance was a lot cleaner than it has been,” Panthers head coach Jade-Renee Vizena said. “We cleaned up the errors, and we are fighting injuries right now, but their girls came out and played their game.”
Dyson has been working back from an offseason injury. She struck out the side in the second inning and four of the final seven batters she faced. She walked one batter and allowed five runs on eight hits.
Dyson also had a big day at the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
“She is still solid,” Vizena said. “She is coming back from an injury from the summer. She is working her way back up to what she was last year.”
The loss ended a four-game win streak for the Hornets (9-4, 0-1).
“I feel like we made a couple of nervous errors early on,” Grand Lake head coach Laura Reeves said. “The leadoff batter got on with an error, we gave up a run in the first and the second, then we gave up eight in the third.
“You take away that leadoff run and three or four of that eight-run inning, and it is a ballgame. We just can’t make errors and expect to come out on top.”
Merryville (9-6, 2-0) broke open a two-run game with eight runs in the third inning on six hits. Harleigh Ferguson and Hannah Harrington each had two-run singles in the inning. The Panthers got at least one hit each from their starting nine.
“We have been stringing hits together,” Vizena said. “We had a dry spell for a second, but it looks like they put it back together tonight.”
Grand Lake broke up Dyson’s shutout bid with three runs in the third and two more in the fifth. Brynn Hardie and Kelli Ledoux each had an RBI triple for the Hornets.
District play continues with Merryville hosting Oberlin on Thursday and Grand Lake visiting Gueydan.
