Simsboro repeats as Class B champ

The Simsboro Tigers repeated as Class B state champions, blowing the game open by outscoring the Zwolle Hawks by 15 points in the third quarter to build a 25-point lead en route to a 67-44 victory Friday at Burton Coliseum.
Nick Maryland was named Most Outstanding Player, finishing with 17 points, 7 rebounds, seven steals, four assists and three blocks.
Chilaydrien Newton scored a game-high 21 points for Simsboro.
Alec Williams led Zwolle with 11 points. Each of the Zwolle’s last three appearances in the championship game have resulted in losses to Simsboro, which also won title games over the Hawks in 2018 and 2019.

North Central won its third Class 1A state championship in four years.
The Hurricanes (32-5) held White Castle to 27 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers to feed their transition game.
North Central guard Reginald Stoner scored 23 points and had seven steals to win the Most Outstanding Player award.
White Castle (19-13) kept the pace to its liking in the first quarter, scoring the game’s first five points.
“They had a good game plan,” North Central head coach Basil Brown said. “They wanted to hold the ball on each possession and slow the game down, so we had to make some changes.
“We played better in the 2-3 and put Stoner up top and he did a great job for us. We were able to get into transition like we want to do.”
Jalen Washington led White Castle with 14 points. Damian Pierce had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

De’Avery Durham made a driving basket with 32 seconds left to cap a second-half comeback for the Bulldogs.
Calvin split a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left and missed a heave from half court at the buzzer.
Bulldogs forward Terrance James was named Most Outstanding Player. He scored 20 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, made five steals and made 8 of 9 field goal attempts.
Joseph Adams scored 18 and added eight rebounds and seven steals for the Cougars, who were playing in a state final for the first time since 1932.
The championship was the first for Gibsland-Coleman since 1999.
