Championships get underway today

White Castle will play for the Class 1A state championship for the fourth time in six years today, topping off the first day of championship games at the boys basketball state tournament.
The Bulldogs will face top-seeded North Central for the title at 1 p.m. today. White Castle (19-12) won titles in 2017 and 2018, with North Central (27-5) claiming back-to-back titles the next two years. Last year White Castle lost the championship game while North Central lost in the semifinals,
White Castle advanced with a 64-51 win over Delhi. North Central beat Lincoln Prep 70-66 in the semifinals.
The Class C title game at 4 p.m. will feature a pair of new faces as Calvin faces Gibsland-Coleman. Calvin (28-2) last appeared in a state final in 1939 while Gibsland-Coleman’s (18-7) last title game was in 1999. Calvin punched its ticket with a 58-42 semifinal win over defending champion Simpson. Gibsland-Coleman beat Phoenix 69-50 to advance.
Play concludes with the Class B championship game at 7 p.m. Simsboro (32-3) and Zwolle (30-5) will play for the title for the third time since 2018. Simsboro won the first two games in 2018 and 2019, and added another title last year.
Zwolle won the 2017 title and advanced with a 38-36 semifinal win over Anacoco, outscoring the Indians 12-2 over the final 1:44.
Simsboro beat Lacassine 70- 51 to advance.
