McNeese State swept a doubleheader from Tarleton State Saturday afternoon to win a nonconference series against the Texans, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped.

The Cowgirls (10-8) completed the sweep with an 8-1 win in the second game.

McNeese took advantage of wild Texans (14-6) pitching to take control of the second game.

The first three McNeese batters walked and came around to score on Texans starter Chyanne Ellett (1-2), who failed to record an out before giving way to Tristan Bridges. Alayis Seneca scored on a wild pitch, Josie Willingham on a wild pitch and Jil Poullard on a single by Reese Reyna.

Willingham singled to score Poullard in the second. Tori Perrin singled in a run in the third and scored on a Chloe Gomez grounder.

Crislyne Moreno had a pinch hit two-run single in the fifth, scoring Gracie Devall and Perrin.

The timely hits were a departure from offensive struggles that have hurt the Cowgirls most of the season.

“Today we had some people settle down and we didn’t try to do too much with the ball,” Cowgirls head coach James Landreneau said. “Instead of trying to get a hit, we just waited for a pitch we could hit hard. We had been trying to force the strike zone. Today we were more aggressive within the strike zone and didn’t do any chasing.”

Ashley Vallejo (5-4) earned the win in relief, pitching the final 4⅔ innings without allowing a run. She entered with the bases loaded in the third inning but escaped with a strikeout and fly ball.

Jil Poullard accounted for all three runs with a home run, sacrifice fly RBI and scoring the winning run on an error after a stolen base.

Whitney Tate (2-4) threw a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out four.

Georgia Capell had an RBI single in the first and solo homer in the fourth to produce both Texans runs.

McNeese answered each time. Poullard was hit by a pitch in the first inning, stole second and scored on two throwing errors.

Poullard answered Capell’s homer with one of her own in the fourth and drove in the winning run off reliever Hannah Mayo (1-2) in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right to score Alayis Seneca, who led off the inning with a double.
