Big bats: Tigers score big in first series

As last minute replacements go, LSU newcomer Jayden Jobert had quite the weekend.

So did LSU baseball in its first shakedown cruise under new head coach Jay Johnson.

About the only question mark was the competition from a Maine Bears team that had hardly seen an outdoor practice back home before getting caught up in the festivities as the Tigers passed the torch from former coach Paul Mainieri to Johnson.

But LSU, which came as advertised as one of the nation’s most imposing offensive teams, could not have done much more in Johnson’s debut while winning 13-1, 17-8 and 21-6.

The 51 runs broke the school record for a season-opening series, topping the mark of 45 that the 1996 eventual national championship team set against Western Kentucky.

Jobert, a junior college transfer from Delgado, had a big part in it — by accident.

He wasn’t in Friday’s original stating lineup but had to pinch hit in the first inning after Cade Beloso was injured moments before first pitch in the pregame jump-around.

Johnson said Beloso will “out for a while” with his knee injury.

Next Man Up worked out pretty well.

Jobert got the Tigers’ first hit in the opening inning, scored the season’s first run on the first home run in his next at-bat and finished the weekend batting .667 (6-for-9) with two home runs and nine RBIs.

That was almost good enough to earn Southeastern Conference Player of the week honors.

But teammate Cade Doughty took that honor by also hitting two home runs while going 8-for- 14 (.571) with three doubles and 12 RBIs.

The starting top six in the LSU batting order, who were mostly replaced with big leads in the late innings, combined to go 30 for 56 (.526) with 33 runs scored, 32 RBIs, six home runs, seven doubles and three triples.

“Now we have to master our skill moving on,” Johnson said. “That’s what this sport requires.

“It comes at you hard and fast. We’re looking forward to our next opportunity.

It will certainly get tougher as the Tigers travel to Ruston Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game at Louisiana Tech, a veteran team which opened with a sweep of Wichita State after going 40-20 last season and advancing to the finals of the NCAA regional it hosted.
