GRAND LAKE — Rylie Bergeron scored a game-high 23 points Thursday night and No. 10 Grand Lake won its fifth consecutive Class 1A playoff opener, 55-20 over Sicily Island.
Bergeron almost had a double-double with 23 points and eight rebounds in three quarters, working the ball inside while showing her range with mid-range jumpers and a 3-pointer in the second quarter.
“She has definitely developed this year,” Grand Lake head coach Baylie Walters said. “Trust me, her teammates push her to develop even more.
“She has definitely stepped up attacking, getting in and finishing the shot and shooting the 3s. She has done it all.”
Grand Lake (16-13) extended its win streak to six and will travel to play No. 7 Oak Grove (16-6) in the regional round at 6 p.m. Monday, looking for its first regional win since 2009.
“It is just the attitude of we are going to get it done,” Walters said. “It doesn’t matter who does what or what happens on the court.
“I have at least 10, 12, 13 kids that just want to get it done, whatever means possible.”
Bergeron scored 12 points in the first quarter to help give the Hornets a 17-3 lead.
Sicily Island cut the deficit to 12-3 on three points from Ricarra Lewis, but Bergeron responded with a long jumper to start a 7-0 run. Lewis led the Tigers with 13 points and six rebounds.
Grand Lake switched it up in the second half, attacking the rim more, and outscored the Tigers 18-1 in the third quarter, led by eight points from Kelli LeDoux. She finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five steals. Brynn Hardie added seven points and 12 rebounds.
“We have to attack the rim first,” Walters said. “We did a whole lot of outside shooting.
“We don’t like to start that way. We like to attack first and then move out. We went in at halftime after a slow first half and asked them to do something that we normally don’t have to. They came out and showed up and did what they were supposed to do.”
