Basile rolls to fourth consecutive state wrestling title, Sulphur’s Hyatt goes undefeated again to win second championship

Basile added to its wrestling dynasty with its fourth consecutive state championship and Sulphur junior Corey Hyatt capped a second undefeated season with his second straight title Saturday at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships in Baton Rouge.
Basile started the final day of the tournament trailing Brusly by a single point, 207-206, but sent six wrestlers to the finals with four winning it all to finish with 248.5 points. De La Salle was the runner up with 191 points while Brusly was third followed by John Curtis and St. Louis Catholic to round out the top five.
Hyatt never trailed as he won his second consecutive Division I 195-pound state championship.
He pinned St. Paul’s Sam Gros in 2:49 in the second round and followed that up with a 14-4 major decision over Chalmette’s Aram Albach. He beat No. 4 Luke Ohler of Brother Martin 11-6 in the finals and No. 2 Hayden Harms of Dutchtown 7-1 in the finals match.
Hyatt is the first Tor to win back-to-back state titles since Vaalyn Jackson in 2003 and 2004 and was named the Division I outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Hyatt is 44-0 over his last two seasons and 79-10 for his career.
Basile’s Jayden Guillory (19-12) won the 120-pound title, Luc Johnson (28-4) took home gold at 138, Christian Bergeron (15-3) was crowned champion at 182-pounds and Anphrony Guillory (32-5) took home the heavyweight (285) title.
In an all-Southwest Louisiana finals match, Guillory trailed Lake Charles College Prep’s Darnell Taylor 1-0 after two periods before scoring three points in the final period to win 3-2. Taylor is the first Trailblazer in school history to place at the state tournament.
No. 2 Jayden Guillory beat No. 1 seed Bryce Fontenot of South Beauregard 9-4 in the 120-pound finals.
The Beacats had a pair of runner ups in Pierson Comeaux (18-7) at 106 pounds and Andre Johnson (26-8) at 126 pounds.
Sam Houston’s Tyson Roach (55-3) won the Division I 106-pound title in dominating fashion, winning three matches by pin and a 16-4 major decision over Jesuit’s Bodi harris in the finals.
St. Louis Catholic’s Graham Montet (28-4) claimed the Division III 170-pound title while teammates Henry Milligan (10-1, 220 pounds) and Luke Caballero (31-9, 113-pounds) placed second in their respective weight classes.
