WELSH — A person of interest in a Welsh shooting is in police custody following a brief standoff Thursday in Jennings.

Welsh Police Chief Marcus Crochet said a person of interest is being interviewed by the Jennings Police Department in connection with a shooting which occurred outside a residence near the corner of Coleman and Welsh streets.

“We received a call of shots being fired around noon in the 600 block of Welsh Street,” Crochet said.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located a young male victim with a gunshot wound to the upper thigh, he said.

The victim, whose name is not being released at this time, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries, Crochet said.

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting to try to determine what led to the victim being shot.

“We are unsure at this time what actually transpired,” Crochet said.

Witnesses to the shooting are not cooperating with police, he said.

Police believe additional suspects may be involved in the shooting.
