Bucs hold off Tors’ late rally

Barbe held off a late Sulphur charge, holding on for a 58-51 District 3-5A win at McNeese State University’s Legacy Center.
The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Bucs (23-4, 4-2).
Barbe led by 10 points midway through the quarter before the Tors (19-11, 3-3) made a final charge. Down 48-38, freshman center J.D. Lafleur led a 12-2 Sulphur spurt that tied the game at 50. Lafleur, who had only two points through three quarters, scored eight points in the outburst, which was capped by a Landon Trahan basket to tie the game.
Barbe put the game away at the free throw line, with Jabbari Barry making six of eight attempts down the stretch.
Ja’Quise Richmond added a putback basket.
Sulphur went one for three from the line in the final minute.
The first half was back-and-forth. Sulphur led most of the first quarter, which ended with the Tors leading 13-8. The lead changed hands five times in the second quarter, with Barbe taking a 28-24 lead into halftime.
Barry led Barbe with 17 points. Jayden Gradney added 16 and Richmond finished with 12.
Dawson Ortego led Sulphur with 12.

The Bucs blitzed the Tors 24-6 in the first quarter, using their pressure defense to force turnovers and easy scoring opportunities.
Areil Williams scored 13 points in the opening quarter to lead Barbe (20-6, 5-1). She finished with a team-high 24 points while Mikaylah Manley added 23 for the Bucs.
Emma Thomson led Sulphur (13-17, 3-3) with 13 points.
