LaGrange. . . . . . . . . . . . 51

The Gators made a pair of second-half charges but could not overtake the Patriots.

Trailing by 10 early in the third quarter, LaGrange outscored Liberty 10-4 over the rest of the quarter to move within four points. Lay Walker scored a pair of baskets in the run for LaGrange.

Liberty stretched the lead back to 10 early in the fourth quarter, but LaGrange rallied again, getting within two points with 3 minutes left on a pair of free throws by McKenzie Shaw.

The Patriots put the game away with an 8-1 run over the next 2 minutes. Mayshiya Cherry led Liberty with 17 points. Ceara Myers added 13 and Anniah Holiday scored 11.

Walker led LaGrange with 13 points. Shaw and Miah Alexis scored 10 each.

“Our effort level was good,” LaGrange head coach La’Keem Holmes said. “There were just a few little things that decided the game — a missed free throw here, a missed box-out there.

“We’re getting better. The best thing about our team is that you can’t tell if we’re up 10 or down 10 by the way we play.”

Holmes said the Gators are focused on continuing to improve headed into the playoffs. LaGrange has won the last two Class 4A state titles.

“We’ve played a lot of good opponents and seen just about everything,” he said. “Our mental approach is a lot better. Now we are much better at handling pressure and knowing how to attack whatever defense we are facing.

“We have a few more good games coming up on Saturdays, against Hicks next week and Lafayette Christian the following week. Those games will help us get ready for the playoffs.”
