A Beauregard Parish man was arrested Thursday and charged in connection with the death of another man found dead outside his residence earlier that morning.

Samuel A. Laughlin, 23, was charged with second-degree murder and one count of obstruction of justice in relation to the death of 25-year-old William Woodson.

According to Sheriff Mark Herford, at about 12:32 a.m. deputies responded to a call from a resident in the Oretta community. Herford said the caller said there was an unresponsive man laying on the ground at the residence.

Herford said when deputies arrived at the residence, they located the body of Woodson and found he appeared to have suffered multiple wounds of various types to his body.

Herford said investigators worked quickly to process the scene and were quickly able to identify Laughlin as a suspect.

Laughlin was apprehended at 1:07 p.m., 12 hours from the discovery of the homicide.

“I am incredibly proud of the deputies and detectives who worked swiftly and professionally to process this scene and the evidence so quickly. I am honored to have such a capable team here at the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office,” Herford said.

Laughlin was booked into the Beauregard Parish Jail with bond to be set.

Herford said the investigation remains ongoing. Woodson’s body has been sent for autopsy, with results pending.
