High school football teams will have to wait an extra day to find out their first round opponents.
According to the Baton Rouge Advocate, Booker T. Washington-New Orleans filed a last-minute emergency appeal to reverse penalties laid down by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association last week, forcing the bracket release to be delayed to today.
According to a post on the LHSAA website and its twitter account, the brackets will be released at 11 a.m. today on the LHSAA Live app and noon on its website.
BTW was forced to forfeit its first seven games of the season after a ruling handed down by the LHSAA on Friday, which dropped them out of playoff contention.
The appeal could affect the Class 3A bracket and possibly others.
BTW would be ranked 11th if their appeal is successful and directly affect some area teams.
Westlake is expecting to enter the playoffs as the No. 17 and travel to No. 16 Grant. No matter what happens with BTW’s appeal, Westlake head coach John Richardson is getting the Rams ready, following their standard game preparations to be ready for anything.
“If they were to win that appeal, we would go from 17 to 18,” Richardson said. “I think they just have to give them their due process, they have to give them their appeal since it happened so late.
“We are preparing for Grant right now. If it changes, we will have to do our best to make adjustments. If it does or doesn’t, we have already done what we normally do. It is not hurting our preparation.”
The Rams (7-3) dropped a road game to Jennings to close the regular season but are looking to bounce back.
“We have to bounce back,” Richardson said. “We are not happy with the rules fo Friday games. Jennings played great. We are going to bounce back and play some good football this week.”
A successful appeal would also bump No. 19 Iota (7-3) and No. 22 Jennings (4-6) down a spot.
Six area teams are expected to host first round games this week in Class 4A No. 12 Leesville (7-2), Class 3A No. 4 Iowa (9-1), Class 2A No. 8 Rosepine (9-1) plus No. 9 Basile (6-4), No. 13 East Beauregard (4-6) and No. 14 Oberlin (4-6) in Class 1A.
Last year’s Class 1A runner up Grand Lake (9-1) is ranked No. 3 and should get a bye in the first round and host in the regional round.
