To memorialize the calves killed and injured last after a truck carrying them overturned on Interstate 10, PETA plans to place a sky-high message near the crash site proclaiming, “See the Individual. Go Vegan.”
“Cows died in terror and agony because of this crash, and many of the traumatized survivors were reportedly shot as they tried to flee or were rounded up and hauled off, likely to end up with their throats slit and their bodies carved up for food,” said PETA Senior Director Danielle Katz. “PETA’s display will encourage anyone disturbed by the thought of animals suffering and dying on the roadside or in the slaughterhouse to go vegan.”
Lake Charles Police Sgt. Shaun Touchet said the tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on I-10 when it left the roadway to the right and overturned. The roof of the tractor-trailer became unsecured during the crash and 10 calves were able to escape on to the interstate.
One of the calves was struck by another tractor-trailer traveling westbound on I-10, Touchet said.
PETA notes there have been at least 58 crashes involving trucks carrying animals used for food so far this year and that there were at least 89 last year.
