SULPHUR — Defense set the tone for the Sulphur Tors Friday in their 24-0 win over Washington-Marion at the Sulphur SPOT Therapy/Billy Navarre Jamboree.

The Tors held the Charging Indians to 13 total yards, including minus-4 in the first half.

Sulphur had six tackles in the backfield, led by junior defensive back Peyton Lemaire, who had a sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss.

“They swarmed to the football and made a lot of plays,” said Sulphur head coach Chris Towery. “I am really proud of them. I saw some good open-field tackles. I saw some guys out in the open-field make some tackles. That is one thing that really excites me about those guys on defense.”

The Tors defense had a solid game with 266 yards, led by senior Tag Stelly, who had 85 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, plus two catches for 17 yards. Quarterback Gage Trahan completed 7 of 15 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, and receiver Kaden Blalock had two catches for 56 yards and a score.

“I thought we played well on both sides of the ball,” Towery said. “We dropped a touchdown pass that I didn’t think we dropped.

“We played some young guys on offense at the end.

“For what we have coming back, two starters on offense and six on defense, I am really pleased with what they did tonight.”

Stelly had a clutch 16-yard catch on third-and-15 to set up the Tors’ first score, a 19-yard reception by Blalock. Stelly scored on a 2-yard run plus a 62-yard score early in the first half.

Sulphur’s Ethan Paiz kicked a 37-yard field goal to close out the first half.

Derrick Paul led W-M with 21 yards on 12 carries.
