JENNINGS — The assistant superintendent of Jeff Davis Parish schools could soon see a $10,000 salary increase.
The School Board’s Finance Committee agreed Tuesday to send a recommendation to the full board to increase the salary for the assistant superintendent position.
The full board will consider the recommendation at its regular meeting at 6 p.m.Thursday in the Welsh Elementary School auditorium.
If approved by the full board, the assistant superintendent’s salary index will increase from 1.7 to 1.87 increasing the annual salary to $110,107. The increase will take effect on Friday.
The Finance Committee began reviewing the assistant superintendent’s salary last month after a discrepancy was found in the daily rate pay schedule, according to Superintendent Kirk Credeur.
“This process started when it came to our attention that Mr. (John) Hall’s daily rate was below that of one of our principals in the district,” Credeur said. “I talked to the board about the possibility of doing an increase for his pay to make sure it was of an appropriate level of the job he does for being second in charge in the district.”
Under the current pay schedule the assistant superintendent was making less than the highest paid principal with some principals making more per day than the assistant superintendent, Credeur said.
“I had proposed it go up to about $104,000, then the board said for it have the right distance from the daily rate of the principals and to ensure that within a year or two somebody doesn’t pass him, it needed to be more,” Credeur said. “They want him to be the second highest paid in the district.”
The board reviewed three possible salary index adjustments, including a $4,000 salary increase before agreeing to change the salary index from 1.7 to 1.87 with a $10,000 increase.
The Finance Committee also agreed to recommend increasing the pay stipend for Pupil Appraisal Coordinator Michael Oretego from $2,4000 per year to $3,600 annually retroactive to July 1.
The money will be paid from special education funds under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA-B).
Credeur said the pay increase is deserving for Oretego who has been overseeing much of the daily tasks of the Pupil Appraisal office.
Ortego’s salary has not been increased in at least five years, Credeur sad.
The full board will also vote on the increase at Thursday’s meeting.
