Kiwanis Club of SW Contraband
The Kiwanis Club of Southwest Contraband received Distinguished Club for the 2017-18 years at the La-Miss-WTenn Mid-Winter Convention in Jackson, Miss., on Jan. 19. Of the five clubs of Lake Charles, Southwest Contraband was the only one to be recognized for this award.
Club President during this award-winning administration year was Craig Boudreaux. Other officers include Carolyn Marcantel, vice president; Magan Waldmeier, secretary; and Karla O’Reilly, treasurer. Southwest Contraband is a club of Division 12 of the La-Miss-WTenn District.
Lake Charles Garden Club
The Lake Charles Garden Club met Jan. 8 at the LSU Ag Center with 25 members present. Guests included seven members of Diggers & Weeders Garden Club. Refreshments were served by hosts: Thelma Fontenot, Belle Thomas and Eva Beaugh.
Vice President Diane LaFargue introduced the speaker, Connie Anne Keppinger, who instructed members on Japanese Kokedamo Balls. Each person was able to make their own ball, which are a form of bonsai, consisting of moss over soil with a plant growing in it. Balls should be kept moist, in bright indirect light, misted and can be hung or displayed on a plate inside or outside, but protected from weather under 40 degrees.
President Patsy Trahan opened the meeting with the invocation and pledge led by Chaplain Thomas.
Trahan appointed a nominating committee of Jean Jackson, Thomas and Fontenot. Candidates will be voted on in April and installed at the May Garden Party. Members were told to mark their calendars for the April 2-3 Convention in Lafayette when Linda Finley will be installed as president of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation.
Ingrid Ayres, Adopt-A-Spot chair, announced the next workday will be 9 a.m. Saturday, April 30.
Rosewood Nursing Home Birthday Corsages for December were made by Linda Daigle and Jan Prudhomme and for January by Ayres and Judy Gardiner.
Outstanding Landscape chairs, Anne Corbello and Prudhomme, chose January’s winner as Cane’s, 4110 Ryan Street, and December’s winner, Trinity Baptist Church, 1800 Country Club Road.
In December, Grace Guth Youth Garden Club chair at St. Louis Catholic Transitions Class read the book “The Prettiest Daffodil” by local author Beth Winslett Fontenot and each member planted paper whites bulbs in a Mason jar.
Historian Gayle McInnis displayed the club scrapbook for group to view at the meeting.
Members of the club participated in an Arbor Day event at Tuten Park Jan. 19.
Ionic Lodge 26 of Lake Charles
On Dec. 12, elections for Ionic Lodge 26 of Lake Charles were conducted by 7th District Deputy Grand Master Shawn Michael Jude Papillon of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Louisiana and its jurisdiction. The following officers were elected, installed and appointed: Worshipful Master Corey Guillory, Senior Warden Eric Fields, Junior Warden Keenun Guillory, Secretary Jimmy Prescott, Assistant Secretary Tavares Berard, Treasurer Warren King, Assistant Treasurer Michael Lilly, Senior Deacon Joseph Victorian, Junior Deacon Johnathon Jones, Senior Steward George Evans, Junior Steward Jeremy Dellafosse, Chaplain Kenneth Williams and Tyler Jared Clark.
Knights of Peter Claver Council 141
The Knights of Peter Claver Council 141 of Immaculate Heart of Mary announces officers for 2019: Milton Bellard, grand knight; Arnold Bellow, deputy grand knight; Gary Gobert, financial secretary; Gary D. Trahan, recording secretary; Edward Gobert, treasurer; Francis Bellow, warden; Martin Jacob, inner guard; Alberto Maxwell, outer guard; Frederick Rideaux, lecturer; Marshall Simien, junior knight commander; Francis Bellow, assistant junior knight commander; Adam Rosemore, relief committee; Lernest Semien, chaplain; board of trustees — Ricky Deculus, three years; Harold Daniel, two years; and Cliff Silverand Jr., one year.
The new officers were sworn in by Past Supreme Deputy Grand Knight Paul Jones.
