NEW ORLEANS — McNeese State’s women’s tennis team improved to 3-0 on Sunday with a 7-0 victory over Xavier. McNeese defeated Loyola 7-0 Saturday.

McNeese swept through the doubles with Victoria Martinez and Ralista Pirdopska and Maria Frausto and Petra

Gudelj winning the Nos. 1 and 2 matches by an 8-3 score.

LaGrange student on ‘Jeopardy!’

LaGrange High School senior Martha Van Hoy competes in the televised “Jeopardy!” teen tournament. The show will air at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, on KFDM Channel 6.

Van Hoy has been watching the trivia game show since her freshman year. She’s won quiz bowls in Lafayette plus a trip to England for winning a local current events rally.

Change of command ceremony

FORT POLK — The public is invited to attend a change of command ceremony Thursday, Feb. 9, for the commander of the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk.

Brig. Gen. Michael B. Sherfield will take over command of the Vernon Parish post from Brig. Gen. Lawson W. Magruder III during the 11 a.m. change of command ceremony on Honor Field.

Top rice & soybean farmers

Wayne Dommert was named top rice producer and Billy Lee Trahan the top soybean producer in Calcasieu Parish during 1969 at the annual banquet of the Calcasieu Farm Bureau Saturday night.

Gene Wittler gave a report on rice production and Edward Jardell on the soybean outlook. John E. Jackson, county agent, presented awards to top producers.

Speech tournament

BEAUMONT — Reniette Morin of St. Charles-Landry placed first in girls’ informative speaking here in the second annual Beaumont High Speech Tournament which had 27 schools from Louisiana and Texas participating.

Mary Juneau of St. Charles-Landry placed second in girls’ persuasive after advancing to the finals. She also reached the semi-finals in girls’ oratory.

75 years ago

Crowley man dies 
in WWII

Navy Fireman First Class Johnny Andrus, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wilford Andrus of Crowley, previously reported missing in action, is now reported dead.

He died on June 15, 1944, and was buried at sea but has a memorial headstone at the United Methodist Church Cemetery in Branch.

Prisoners of war

Nine area men are reported prisoners of war of Germany, including: Pvt. James O. Dunn of Oakdale, Cpl. Buford B. Evans of Anacoco; Sgt. Homer T. Fitts of Anacoco; Pvt. Asa J. Frederick of Abbeville.

Also, Tech. Fifth Grade Jim P. Galloway of DeRidder; Pvt. Wilton J. Hebert of Scott, 1st Lt. Victor L. Phelps of Welsh, 2nd Lt. Eugene C. Saur of Abbeville, and Pvt. Marcelle C. Wilson of Zwolle.
