Maxine Royer Andrus, 97, of Moss Bluff, died Monday, June 24, at home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today, June 26, at First Pentecostal Church. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Ragley, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.

Dr. D. Dale Archer Sr.

Dr. D. Dale Archer Sr., 95, of Lake Charles, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019, at a local hospital following an extended illness.

Dr. Archer was a native of Luttrell, Tenn., and a graduate of University of Tennessee Knoxville. Dr. Archer completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans and practiced as an Ophthalmologist there for a year before moving to Lake Charles. In 1959, Dr. Archer founded the Eye Clinic on Oak Park Boulevard as the sole physician. Beginning with his vision and leadership, The Eye Clinic has grown to a multi-specialty practice with five locations, 12 physicians and over 100 employees serving southwest Louisiana.

While a dedicated physician, Dr. Archer decided to retire at the age of 65 and concentrate his efforts on his passion for golfing. He enjoyed playing golf and was an active member of the Lake Charles Country Club, where he served on the board until just recently. Dr. Archer and his wife shared the love of golf and traveled throughout the world sharing a round of golf with others as active members of People to People International. Besides his family, some of his most treasured awards are his “Hole in One” awards from the Lake Charles Country Club. He was also active in the Mardi Gras community, having been past king of the Krewe of Mystique.

Dr. Archer sponsored a scholarship in nursing for many years at McNeese State University and was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

Dr. Archer was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey Wayne and Louise Smith Archer.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 62 years, Valerie Grode Archer; son, Dr. D. Dale Archer Jr.; and a daughter, Lee Ann Archer; grandchildren, D. Dale Archer III and Adrianna Archer Ross; and a great-granddaughter, Camilla Ross.

Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Johnson Funeral Home. Private family services and inurnment will be at a later date.

Words of comfort to the family may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhome.net.

Matthew Frank Dossman

Matthew Frank Dossman, 61, passed away in his home peacefully into the arms of his Father, his Savior on Father’s Day, June 16, 2019, after a week of service to the Father at his church’s Vacation Bible School. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Denise Lyons Dossman; and two brothers, Rick and Jeb Abshire. He is survived by his children, Heather Dossman Inman (Jeremy), Matthew Dossman II and Brittney Dossman; and his grandchildren, Jack, Anna Grace, Sutton, Aubrey Kate, Aizlee and Arrington. Matt had the blessing of deep friendships. Some have gone before, and those who remain: “best friends,” special friends, brothers and sisters in Christ, and his church “family” will be left to cherish his memory.

Matt was a lifelong resident of Welsh. He farmed rice and soybeans for several years and was most recently self-employed in grounds-keeping /maintenance. He was the kind of man with many talents, a servant in his church, community, and to all with a need he could ease or fill. He preached at Golden Age of Welsh in an early Sunday morning service for several years. For 21 years, his home was open as a gathering place to any and all for a bi-weekly Bible Study. He was recognized by his town for “outstanding and dedicated service,” a responder in crisis situations, a representative on town committees, a part of ministerial alliances in Roanoke and Welsh, a past reserve police officer in both Jennings and Welsh. He was a helper in many areas, including: encouraging young people to work at a local youth mission, getting people to drug treatment programs, doing home repair projects, mowing yards, bringing friends to fish and cooking for many businesses, organizations and for his family.

Matt was a skilled hunter, an avid fisherman and a gardener. His grandchildren will treasure the tradition of celebrating Christmas in February; going to the rodeo with all the cousins; riding 4-wheelers; and eating rice and gravy, fresh cucumbers and banana peppers at Paw Paw’s house.

Matt LOVED God, studied the Bible, and tried to live a life that reflected Christ’s Light, goodness and forgiveness. Matt’s new life only came by being transformed years back. He was a sinner saved by God’s grace alone, who would want the “praise, glory and honor” to be given to the Lord. He would want his “legacy” to be the telling of others how to go to heaven by confessing Jesus as their Lord and believing in their heart that Jesus was raised from the dead. See Romans 10:9.

In keeping with the schedule of the Friday night Bible Study, a Celebration of Life in memorial to Matt will be held on Friday, June 28, at his church, Roanoke Baptist Church. The church will open at 3 p.m. and service will begin at 6 p.m. Pastor Darrell Hieronymus and Evangelist Al King will officiate.

John O. Hebert Jr.

Together again: On June 20, John O. Hebert Jr. was reunited with Bernadine Castille Hebert, his wife of 50 years, who pre-deceased him in 1998. He will be greatly missed, but it makes us smile to picture their joyful reunion.

John was born in Baton Rouge and raised in Grand Prairie. After serving in Italy during World War II as a reconnaissance pilot in his “Grasshopper” plane, he returned to LSU to finish his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was recalled to the Army to serve in the Korean War in the Artillery Division.

John retired in 1982 after working for 30 years at Cities Service. He has since enjoyed 37 years of retirement — we should all be so lucky! He remained an LSU fan to the end. One highlight for him was attending the 2016 Homecoming game and watching his Tigers beat Ole Miss. He also became an avid golfer during his retirement. His trophy celebrating his hole-in-one at Mallard Cove Golf Course at the age of 79 never left his desk.

John loved traveling. He and Bernadine took several road trips throughout the U.S. and Canada and cruised to see much of the rest of the world. His favorite pastime was tending his flowers, roses being his favorite. No trip to his home was complete without a tour of his gardens. His yard was twice featured in the Lake Charles Rose Tour of Homes.

He is survived by four children, Carolyn, O’Neil (Marilyn), Castille (Elaine), and Leandre (Dawn); his sister, Jeanne Foreman; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren with one on the way. He was also pre-deceased by his second wife, Betty Chauvin.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Johnson Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Opelousas. He will be buried next to Bernadine in Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Louisiana Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 10101 Siegen Lane Suite 2A, Baton Rouge, LA 70810.
