JENNINGS — District 7 School Board member Jimmy Segura was re-elected Thursday to a second four-year term as president of the Jefferson Davis Parish School Board.
The board voted 12-1 for Segura. District 5 board member Donn E. Dees was unanimously re-elected vice president.
District 10 member Richard McNabb cast the lone vote against Segura.
“He thought I shouldn’t have spoke against the superintendent,” McNabb said, explaining his no vote. “He had a letter sent to the (state) Board of Ethics to try to have me removed. He lost; I won.”
McNabb said the complaint stems from a private meeting he had with a new principal at a school in his district.
Segura said he hopes to continue the progress being made by Jeff Davis Parish schools while looking to the future.
“I want to continue the work the long-range planning committee has done because it has been vital to our school system,” Segura said.
“They have been talking about ways to save money by cutting expenses without having to cut programs and teachers,” he continued. “They have looked at long-range plans for our buildings. What buildings may need upgrades and at some point some new schools may need to be built.”
The six-member committee has been discussing immediate and long-range plans for the school system since being appointed earlier this year.
The goal of the committee will be to look at where the system needs to be in the future, Superintendent David Clayton said.
The focus will include finances, schools, maintenance, employees, programs and other services vital to the school system.
