WESTLAKE — There is not a better spot in Westlake to watch “American Idol” than in the home of Joshua Ledet’s parents, Nathaniel and Jacklyn Ledet.
Their TV room comes equipped with a 110-inch screen and theater seating.
That’s where the family was Wednesday night, watching Joshua perform Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish.”
The large crowd — Joshua is the youngest of eight brother’s and sisters — was quiet when “Idol” came on, but came to life at the first glimpse of him on the big screen.
“Go, Josh!” several family members erupted.
“I can’t believe that’s my boy,” Jacklyn exclaimed after Joshua had finished singing. “That’s so unreal to me.”
That was a shared sentiment.
“It’s quite amazing,” said the sibling closest to him in age, his sister, Joanna Ledet. “Sometimes, I’m like, ‘Is this real?’ ”
In Westlake, Joshua’s family has continued about their daily lives, but has kept a close eye on Hollywood, gathering around the big TV twice a week to watch “Idol”. When the show is over, they queue it up again and watch some more.
“I watch him on YouTube every night until I fall asleep,” his brother, Nate Ledet, said. “I watch it over and over.”
Jacklyn said she and Joshua talk on the phone often.
“We just talk about what’s going on over there and what’s going on over here,” Jacklyn said. “He asks ‘What did y’all have to eat last night?’ ”
His brother, Jason Ledet, and family friend, Chris Wilrye, went to visit him in Hollywood this week, so Jacklyn packed up some jambalaya and sent it to him.
The Ledets are a musical family, though none will confess to having a voice like Joshua’s.
“I sing a little bit when I’m preaching, but he got that from his mom,” said his pastor dad, Nathaniel.
Joshua showed talent from an early age.
“He sang for my momma’s funeral at 10 years old,” his cousin, Rico Rideau, said.
“When he was little, he used to walk around with a fake mic and suit on,” Nate said.
Rico said Josh sang so much growing up that his sisters would tell him to quit.
“If he was here today, he’d be singing,” Nate said.
Ledet’s nephew, 11-year-old Nathaniel Ledet III, believes Joshua can win “American Idol” if he “just keeps singing good and believes in himself.”
His family did its part — as soon as Wednesday night’s show was over, everyone whipped out their cell phones and started voting for Josh.
“We are really supportive of each other,” Joanna said. “Whatever we can do to support each other, we are all about it.”
“We are Team Josh,” Nate said.
