Canada’s smartest person played football for LSU

Well, that’s what I heard, anyway.

Peter Dyakowski, who first got our attention by being the first Canadian scholarship football player at LSU, plays in the Canadian Football League. He won the honor of Canada’s Smartest Person on a two-hour television show in his home country.

He was fun to be around during his days at LSU. He drove from his home in Vancouver, B.C. (which is a much easier drive for me nowadays), and he showed up in a powder-blue 1979 Firebird. He also had a hairstyle that could best be described as a mullet, which he later gave up after LSU won the 2003 BCS national championship.

He would give thoughtful answers to questions, not canned responses, and he used words most of his teammates did not. He attended LSU baseball games and chased foul balls from the bleachers with the passion of a 10-year-old. He was quite colorful. He studied hard, played hard, and went back to Canada and carved out a career.

And now a rep as Canada’s Smartest Person.
