When will repairs be made to Commercial Street in north Lake Charles?

The 2000-2100 blocks are desperately in need of repair.

These blocks are narrow with ditches and when cars park on the street driving is almost impossible, thus creating safety hazards for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.

“The 2000 and 2100 blocks of Commercial Street are being evaluated by the city’s engineering staff and will be considered for a future asphalt overlay or other road improvements,” Mike Huber, city planning director, said in a statement forwarded to The Informer.

He urged residents to call the Mayor’s Action Line at 491-1346 to relay their concerns or comments.

LC police have policy on running vehicles

Why do Lake Charles city police officers leave their units running when they are eating at restaurants?

Deputy Chief Mark Kraus provided the policy on police vehicles left running:

“When a vehicle is unoccupied for any length of time, the vehicle will be turned off. An exception may occur when emergency lighting equipment is in use or upon arrival at an urgent service call where shutting the engine off would be impractical. Officers who utilize canine officers are also exempt when weather dictates the necessity to maintain appropriate internal vehicle temperatures for the health of the canine.”

Kraus said that if residents “see anything that is in conflict with this policy we ask them to report it to the on-duty supervisor.”

JD school bus stops ‘constantly reviewed’

Who in Jeff Davis Parish is responsible for checking school bus routes for signs posting bus stops for the safety of our children?

One route has not been inspected for five years. Is the School Board responsible?

Jeff Davis Superintendent Kirk Credeur said the state doesn’t require the posting of school bus stops.

“Every school bus stop has been determined initially as an approved site by the school transportation department and is constantly reviewed in accordance to the needs and safety of students. …,” he wrote in an email.

“School bus drivers monitor the routes daily and are required to report any unsafe conditions immediately to their supervisor.”

He encouraged parents to report bus stop safety issues to school officials.
