WELSH — The Board of Aldermen next month will consider increasing the annual salary of the town’s police chief by $15,000.

With little discussion Tuesday, the council unanimously introduced a measure to raise the salary from $40,000 to $55,000 at the recommendation of Mayor Carolyn Louviere.

The issue will be voted on July 11.

“When Marcus (Crochet) came in we set his salary at $40,000,” Louviere said. “He’s never had any raise since he has been in there for two terms.”

The previous council has discussed increasing the chief’s salary, but left the ultimate decision up to the incoming council, which took office in January.

Money for the raise was included in the new fiscal year budget approved last month, but no official action has been taken to approve the raise, she said.

“I support the raise because Marcus has done a wonderful job and I feel he deserves something, but that is up to the aldermen to decide,” Louviere said. “All the men and women serving to protect us deserve a raise.”

The council voted 3-2 last month to approve a $253,282 increase for the Welsh Police Department; it included an across-the-board raise for police employees.
