Residents have the chance to win handbags from brands like Dooney & Bourke, Brahmin and Michael Kors on Saturday during Bingo for Designer Purses — a charity fundraiser hosted by the local graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Foreman-Reynaud Community Center, 215 Albert St., with door prizes, food and music. Bingo will start at 7 p.m. and will include 20 rounds in which each winner receives a designer purse.

Proceeds will benefit Stork’s Nest, a joint project of Zeta Phi Beta and the March of Dimes Foundation that provides education and resources to expectant mothers.

Sorority member Deneen Sweet said she got the idea for the event from a fundraiser at her former chapter in Florida. She said she hopes the bingo night attracts a large crowd so the sorority can make a substantial donation to Stork’s Nest.

“It’s important that we give back to the community through the Stork’s Next program so we can help low-income mothers when they’re getting started by educating them and giving them what they need,” Sweet said.

Tickets cost $60 and include food and entertainment. Attendants can pay at the door or contact Sweet at 352-409-3952.

 Community baby shower

The chapter will also partner with the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury to host another event benefiting Stork’s Next — an annual community baby shower — on Saturday, Sept. 16, 10-noon in the Allen P. August Multi-Purpose Annex, 2000 Moeling St.

Residents can donate supplies or used baby items like cribs and strollers before or during the shower. Free health consultations and information stations will be available.

To donate, contact Ernesteen Valere at 433-5034.
