City to study whether to raise limit on Lake St.

Why is a four-lane street like Lake Street still 35 mph?

The city planning department will ask for a traffic study of Lake Street to see if the speed limit should be increased, said Mike Huber, city planning director.

Traffic studies document street capacity, vehicle counts and the average speed of drivers, Huber said.

“City Code establishes a 25 mile per hour speed limit for all city streets, except where otherwise noted,” he said in a statement forwarded to The Informer.

“The City Council may assign higher or lower speed limits for individual streets based on a traffic study.”

Some streets and speed limits listed in the code:

45 mph

Lakeshore Drive, from Broad Street to Interstate 10.

McNeese Street, from Louisiana Avenue to Highway 14.

Broad Street, from Sixth Avenue to east city limits.

Prien Lake Road, from Highway 14 to west city limits.

Investigation of fire at Sasol ongoing

What caused the fire at Sasol last month, and what is the latest on the person who was injured?

Sasol spokeswoman Kim Cusimano said the fire, which happened in an alcohol unit in the company’s Lake Charles East Plant on July 30, is being investigated.

“One Sasol employee sustained injuries as a result of the incident and is home recovering,” Cusimano wrote in an email. “He is expected to make a full recovery.”

All members present voted for agreement

Who on the City Council voted to share the costs of landscaping the Ryan Street and Cove Lane exits with the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury?

All five of the council members present at the July 19 meeting voted to enter a cooperative endeavor agreement with the Police Jury: Johnnie Thibodeaux, Mark Eckard, Rodney Geyen, Mary Morris and Stuart Weatherford.

Council members John Ieyoub and Luvertha August were absent from the meeting.

Under the agreement, the city will pay $135,000, and the parish will cover up to $45,000 of the project costs, which officials said would total $180,000.
