Sgt. James Anderson said troopers responded to the accident, on La. 3020 near Catalina Street, just before 1 a.m.

Anderson said a 2015 Nissan Altima heading west ran off the road, struck a culvert and became airborne. He said the vehicle then struck a second culvert before landing in the roadway.

The driver, 52-year-old Robbie Fontenot of Evangeline, and his passenger, 34-year-old Tommie Harris Jr. of Houston, were both pronounced dead at the scene, Anderson said. Neither was wearing a seat belt, he said.

A toxicology sample was obtained from Fontenot and will be submitted for analysis, Anderson said.
