For Halloween this year, expect to see everything from princesses to superheroes to gorillas.
Store managers at Party City, Spirit Halloween and Medearis all agree that people are buying a wide variety of costumes this year, with no specific costume being the most popular.
Steve Abshire, Party City store manager, said men are going more with funny costumes this year.
“We sold out of gorilla costumes pretty fast, and people are going with Kermit and Miss Piggy and Marge and Homer Simpson,” he said. “People are really wanting to dress up more this year, and they want to be funny.”
Iomikoe Johnson at Medearis said pirates have been their most popular seller, but a lot of people are looking for something funny there, too.
“Most everyone wants to be fun stuff,” she said. “We have had a few people wanting to dress up as Shrek, and one man wanted to be a tree.”
Johnson said costumes from antiquity are classics that are popular every year.
“Quite a few people want to be Cleopatra and Julius Caesar,” she said.
Medearis owner Edwina Medearis said women like to take advantage of being able to be anything they want for Halloween.
“The sexy costumes are always popular with women,” she said. “Most ladies want to be cute or sexy regardless of their size.”
Medearis said superhero and genie costumes are always in vogue.
Nikki Neas, Spirit Halloween store manager, said children are going with military and princess costumes.
“Little boys love the accessories that go with the military costumes. They want the guns and the swords,” she said. “Little girls are the same, but they want the wigs and tiaras and the princess dresses.”
Neas said it’s hard to pinpoint a particular adult costume as popular because they are “across the board.”
“We have people wanting the classic Marilyn Monroe and Elvis. Animal costumes like skunks, foxes and raccoons are popular, too,” she said. “We had a group of guys come in and get all the different Teletubbie costumes, and Katy Perry is a new one that’s been popular, too.”
Neas said sales are more than last year, and people still can’t get enough of the timeless classics.
“The storybook characters never get old,” she said. “Dorothy, Snow White, Belle, Robin Hood, Little Red Riding Hood, those always come back and are always a favorite.”
Neas said the movies play a role in what costumes are popular, as well.
“People love the Toy Story costumes and the Cars costumes,” she said. “The big movies are always a hit.”
Abshire said children want what they see on the big screen, as well.
“The Transformers costumes are a big seller, and Captain America,” he said. “A lot of the movie characters are popular for the boys.”
He also said girls are “sticking with the classics.”
“We sold a lot of the bumblebee and ladybug costumes for little girls,” he said.”A lot of older girls are going with the new Monster High costumes and the classic Disney characters.”
