Daily cost to house state unmates just over $50

How much does it cost taxpayers every day to house convicted murderers in prison?
The Informer noted in March that the overall cost to house an inmate in a Louisiana prison is $53.31 per day.
State Department of Corrections spokeswoman Pam Laborde said officials don’t parse costs in the budget based on inmate housing assignments — i.e., death row or general population.
The figures they arrive at comprise the prisons’ full daily cost per inmate, she said.
Those costs by prison, according to state DOC data:
Angola State Penitentiary — $56.22.
Avoyelles Correctional Center — $43.19.
Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women — $52.96.
Winn Correctional Center — $31.69.
Allen Correctional Center — $31.55.
Dixon Correctional Center — $63.85.
Hunt Correctional Center — $76.29.
Wade Correctional Center — $59.45.
Rayburn Correctional Center — $50.30.

Newspapers accepted at city, parish sites
A friend and I were talking about the newspapers we get every day, and we wanted to know if there is a place to bring them for recycling.
There are several.
The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury’s solid waste drop-off sites and the city of Lake Charles’ Green Stations accept newspapers.
The parish sites — both of them open 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday-Monday — are at 2915 Post Oak Road in Sulphur and 5500 B Swift Plant Road in Lake Charles.
They also accept aluminum cans, plastic bottles and empty aerosol cans.
For more information, call 721-3700.
The city’s Green Station 1 is at 4331 East Broad St. and is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Green Station 2 is at the Nelson Ball Field on Alma Lane and is open 8 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
They accept bagged aluminum cans, cellphones, plastics and fluorescent bulbs. Green Station 1 also takes used motor oil.
For more information, call 491-1440.
