DeRidder council to consider honorary renaming of street

DeRidder City Council members will hold a public hearing June 12 to discuss the honorary renaming of North Street in the memory of a local soldier.
Sandra McCoy requested the street’s name change to SSG Donisha Stroman Street in honor of her daughter who was killed in a hit and run accident in Lake Charles last October.
The family moved to North Street when Stroman was 13, and McCoy said that her daughter was quick to make friends with neighbors living on and near the street by riding her bicycle and scooter along the street each day. McCoy said that Stroman soon became a welcomed face throughout the neighborhood, and that continued even after she joined the mlitary in 2010.
“When she would take leave she would always come home and she would jog down the street visiting with everyone she knew, just like when she was little and riding her bike. She would stop and talk to everyone and even try to recruit them sometimes,” McCoy stated.
“I told her when she joined the military that nothing would change at home, and she told me once that I was right.”
In 2016, Stroman was serving as an Army recruiter when she was killed in a hit and run accident in Lake Charles on Oct. 29. In February, McCoy and other members of Stroman’s family offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the driver of the vehicle, but to date no arrests have been made.
According to the city council’s proposed ordinance, if approved, the honorary name designation will not require residents and businesses located on North Street to formally change their addresses.
