Allen Parish: School Board calls for tax vote

OBERLIN –The Allen Parish School has called a Saturday, April 9 election on five property tax continuation for maintenance and operation of schools in Elizabeth, Oakdale, Kinder and Oberlin.

“These are just continuation of maintenance taxes that have to be renewed every few years,” Superintendent Michael Doucet said.

The tax dollars are used to provide additional support to the schools, including construction and improvements, routine maintenance and other operational expenses.

Voters in School District 1, which includes the Elizabeth school, will decide on a 23.35-mill property tax. The measure represents a .32-mill increase over the 23.03 mills to be levied through 2016.

The millage would generate $58,375 annually.

Voters in School District 5, which includes the Oakdale schools, will decide on a 7.62 mill property tax. It generates $280,788 a year.

Voters in School District 25, which includes the Kinder schools, will decide on two separate tax millages.

The first measure, a 5.51-mill property tax, represents a .35-mill increase over the 5.16 currently being collected.

It would generate $148,770 annually.

A separate 7.38-mill property tax is also being sought. It represents a .17-mill increase over the current 7.21-mill. It would generate $201,105 annually.

Voters in School District Ward One, which includes the Oberlin schools, are being asked to approve a 5.76-mill property tax. It represents a .47-mill increase over the current 5.29-mills. It would generate $60,480.

All millages are for 10 years.

Early voting for the election will be held March 26-April 2 at the Allen Parish Registrar of Voters Office in Oberlin
