Doughnut Hole

A stop by this new Ryan Street shop will make your mornings a whole lot sweeter

Is it donut or doughnut? Lots of shops that sell the circular pieces of sweet, fried dough go with the shorter spelling. However, Doughnut Hole, a new eatery at 2314 Ryan St., spells it the longer way.

Like most newspapers, the American Press follows the Associated Press writing style, which advises spelling it the longer way, too.

That means even if a business calls their product a donut, we must still call it a doughnut if we write about it. As in “I stopped by the XYZ Donut Shop and bought a doughnut.” Which can make a curious reader wonder why we would spell doughnut two different ways in one sentence.

All that to say hats off to Doughnut Hole for bringing a little consistency to a food review. It’s a place where they call a doughnut a doughnut.

Doughnut Hole, which opened six weeks ago, is at the intersection of Ryan and W. 15th streets, in the old Coco’s Shoe Store location. The building’s bright red and yellow colors make it hard to miss.

Doughnut Hole has a drive-thru window, but if you choose to dine in, there are three good-sized tables in the roomy dining area and the place is extremely clean. The staff is friendly, fast and efficient.

The prices are reasonable, and owner David Sov said absolutely everything is made fresh daily.

I sampled the 16-ounce French vanilla cappuccino, which costs $1.76, and a generously sized sausage, egg and cheese croissant for $2.99. Both were wonderfully satisfying.

Maria Torres had a glazed doughnut, which she described as “golden sweet and fluffy — with just the right amount of glaze.”

She added that the glazed doughnut was an excellent choice with her morning coffee, and she would definitely recommend it.

Aside from glazed doughnuts, the shop sells a variety of fancy doughnuts, including the jelly-filled kind. It also has doughnut holes, cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, eclairs, biscuits, breakfast burritos, crawfish pistolettes and quite a few varieties of kolaches and croissants. All the offerings look mouth-wateringly delicious.

If you need something with which to wash it all down, you can choose from coffee, cappuccinos, canned or bottled drinks of all kinds, white milk, chocolate milk, apple juice and orange juice.

The shop also offers ice-blended coffee drinks in six different flavors and seven flavors of fruit smoothies. All 16-ounce iced coffees and fruit smoothies are $3.50.

It’s easy to remember Doughnut Hole’s hours. If it’s morning, they’re open — 4 a.m.-noon every day.

Why not treat yourself? Stop by Doughnut Hole and try a fresh, tasty doughnut, spelled the long way.
