DirecTV lineup governed by legal, contract issues

I live just north of I-10. I was not told when I ordered the service of DirecTV that because of where I live — mind you, in the 70601 ZIP code — that I would not be able to receive the ABC and CBS channels in Lafayette and Beaumont, Texas. Instead, I get the networks from Alexandria.

I feel this is very unfair when I live closer to the aforementioned cities. What’s going on in Alexandria is of far less interest to me, and I can’t afford both DirecTV and Suddenlink. Why doesn’t DirecTV offer the Lafayette and Beaumont stations?

“The customer lives in the Lake Charles designated market area, which does not have locally based ABC, CBS (or PBS) stations,” Tarvis Thompson, a spokesman for AT&T, owner of DirecTV, wrote in an email.

“When we launched local channels there in 2011, we decided to bring in the ABC and CBS (and PBS) from Alexandria so customers would have all of their primary local TV networks from Louisiana-based affiliates.”

Thompson said “a variety of contractual, legal and business considerations” prevent AT&T from offering certain locally broadcast channels to DirecTV customers.

“We apologize for any inconvenience these limitations may cause,” he said.
