LSU spent most of Saturday seemingly begging for an embarrassing baseball loss.
Fortunately for the Tigers, their pitching wouldn’t hear of it.
LSU was held to a season-low five hits for the second straight game, but Tiger pitching shut down the Huskies to hold on for a 3-1 victory.
“We need to be a team that can in a lot of ways,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said. “And we’ve been doing that.”
But Johnson’s 200th career victory didn’t come easy.
LSU starter Cooper Moore held Northeastern to just three hits while striking out 10 in 7 2/3 innings.
Moore (3-0), a transfer from Kansas, gave up the Huskies only score on a solo home run in the fifth by A.J. Schettino, who also had a double.
“Cooper is a star,” Johnson said of the Kansas transfer. “There’s always that one guy you bring to your team who you know is going to be as good as you want him to be. Cooper is that guy for this team. He’s got great competitive character, a great pitch mix, and he goes out and executes.”
Deven Sheerin pitched the final 1 1/3 inning, allowing no hits and striking out three.
The LSU duo was almost overshadowed by Northeastern righthander Luc Rising.
LSU scored single runs in three of the first four innings, but none after Rising entered the game with one out in the fourth.
He allowed just one hit while frustrating the Tigers mostly with breaking balls in his 4 2/3 innings.
LSU (10-1) will be back in action Sunday at 12:30 p.m., against Dartmouth (1-3), which the Tigers beat 5-2 Friday while also managing just five hits. Dartmouth had a game Saturday night against Grambling.
Even when scoring Saturday, the Tigers weren’t exactly knocking it all over the yard.
Brown scored in the first when he stole home — a bang-bang moment just before Steven Milam was tagged out at second for the third out on the back end of an attempted double steal.
Brayden Simpson got an RBI single in the second and the Tigers final rn came in the fourth
