The Cowgirls continue to be power brokers.
McNeese State’s softball team swept a doubleheader Saturday against Big 12 Conference foe Baylor in Waco, Texas.
McNeese rallied to win the opener 5-4, then took the nightcap 6-2, raising their season record to 15-6.
The twin wins give the Cowgirls three straight wins over teams from power conferences. McNeese is nearing the end of 10 straight against power teams and has already clinched a winning record during that stretch.
Rylee Cloud had three hits and drove in four runs during the day. Jada Munoz had two hits, including a triple, in the second game as the Cowgirls scored a pair of runs in the second and three in the third. Nyjah Fontenot had a hit and three RBIs.
It was Fontenot’s 2-run single in the third that gave McNeese a 5-2 lead, more than enough for starting pitcher Kyneli Chapman, who went the distance.
Chapman allowed six hits and just one earned run while improving her record to 4-3.
In the first game, Cloud’s RBI single capped a 3-run sixth as the Cowgirls rallied to win. Kassidy Chance, returning to action after an injury, drove in the first two runs of the sixth with a pinch-hit single.
McNeese entered the inning down 4-2 after taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Munoz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and nobody out. However, the Cowgirls could not add to their lead.
Cloud and Alexis Dibbley each had two of the Cowgirls’ four hits.
Maddie Taylor (5-1) went the first six innings to pick up the win, while Brookelyn Taylor struck out two in the seventh to earn her fourth save of the year.
