LSU took its sweet time about it Friday night, but the Tigers did eventually wake up to beat Dartmouth 5-2 after trailing for much of the game.

Derek Curiel’s 2-run double in the sixth gave LSU a 3-2 lead and the Tigers padded it with single runs in the seventh and eighth.

“Our team is capable of winning in a lot of different ways,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said. “I’m glad we were able to win when I know there are things we can do a lot better.”

LSU starter Casan Evans combined with Gavin Guidry to hold Dartmouth to three hits. But lead-off walks issued by Evans in the second and third innings both came around to score to give the Big Green a 2-0 lead.

Guidry pitched the final 3 2/3 innings Friday, allowing just one hit while striking out five. He still has not walked a batter or given up a run in his nine innings of work this season.

Guidry, who missed all of last year with a back injury, in four appearances this year, all in relief, is now 3-0 with a save.

LSU took the lead shortly after Guidry entered in the top of the sixth with a runner on second and got a strike out and fly out to end the threat.

“Great competitors,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said. “I would trust those two guys with my life. Those are two of the best I’ve ever had in all my coaching stops with their competitive make-up.

“If we run those guys out t here on a Friday, we’re going to win a lot this season.”

Evans struck out 10 in his 5 1/3 innings.

“He kept us in the game,” Johnson said.

LSU (9-1) will be back at it Saturday at 2 p.m. against Northeastern (1-5) which won its first game of the year earlier Friday with a 4-1 win over Grambling.

LSU hit the ball hard all night, but too often right at defenders while being held to a season-low five hits.

LSU didn’t score until the fourth when it cut the lead in half on a safety squeeze bunt by Trent Carraway that plated Mason Braun.

Curiel’s go-ahead double came after Brayden Simpson walked and Carraway singled to set the table.
