Have broom, will travel. LSU swept through Jacksonville, Fla. this weekend.
The No. 2-ranked Tigers scored 34 runs in three victories in the Live Like Lou Jax Classic, saving their best pitching performance for last in an 11-0 victory over Central Florida Sunday to stay perfect on the season at 8-0.
The 10-run mercy rule came into play when LSU put up four in the top of the seventh. It was the fourth time in eight games LSU forced an early end to games.
Highly touted sophomore righthander William Schmidt, who had an up and down season a year ago, made a strong case to be LSU’s Sunday starter with five shutout innings.
Schmidt (2-0) struck out seven, gave up three hits and walked only one, which was often a problem for him last year after he passed up the Major League draft to play for the Tigers.
Three of his strikeouts came in succession after he gave up a leadoff double in the fourth.
He had plenty of support.
Jake Brown and Derek Curiel had three RBIs apiece and Cade Arrambide hit a 2-run homer, a towering shot that was his second in as many days.
“The goal is to play the best we can possibly play and preparing and respecting what it takes to be close to our potential,” Johnson said. “That’s what I see these guys doing right now.”
The Tigers got the lead-off man on in five of their seven at-bats, but didn’t score until pushing across three runs in the third on Brown’s RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Seth Dardar that scored Brown, while Steven Milam scored on a bases loaded balk.
Arrambide hit his home run in the fifth, followed by a sacrifice fly by Trent Carraway and an RBI single.
Brown, who went 2-for-5, capped the 4-run top of the seventh with a 2-run single that put the 10-run run in play.
Mavrick Rizy pitched the final two innings, keeping the Knights scoreless despite giving up a walk in each inning.
The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday night when they host McNeese.
