UPDATE: Arrest warrant issued in officer-involved shooting

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s detectives have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a 29-year-old Lake Charles man who was shot during a struggle with a deputy on Sunday in Sulphur

Laudrick L. Pate, 29, is charged with resisting an officer by refusing to identify; flight from an officer; resisting a police officers with force or violence; battery of a police officer; disarming a peace officer; and aggravated assault upon a peace officer.

Judge Tony Fazzio set his bond at $251,000.

Pate was transferred to a hospital out of town and CPSO will execute his warrant upon his release from the hospital.

Louisiana State Police are investigating the incident at the request of the sheriff’s office.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a deputy with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near U.S. Highway 90 (E. Napoleon Street) and Willow Avenue in Sulphur. During the stop, Pate, the vehicle’s front passenger, fled from the traffic stop on foot.

After a brief foot pursuit, a deputy attempted to detain him, and a struggle ensued. During the altercation, Pate gained control of the deputy’s TASER and deployed it at the deputy, according to the CPSO.

As a result, the deputy discharged their firearm and struck Pate, according to the CPSO

Pate was taken into custody and received medical aid before being transported to a hospital with serious injuries. The deputy involved in the incident sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene.

This investigation remains ongoing.
