Cowgirls score 4 in seventh for road win

Trailing by two runs and down to their last out, the Cowgirls scored four times in the top of the seventh and then held on to win Tuesday night at Southern Mississippi.

The 8-6 comeback came in McNeese softball’s first road game of the season. They will end the short road swing against Sun Belt Conference teams Wednesday night at South Alabama.

With the victory, the Cowgirls improved to 8-4 on the young season. Southland Conference Player of the Week continued her hot start by hitting her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the third.

The real action came in the seventh, as Jada Munoz tied the game with a single to left that scored Nyjah Fontenot from second to make it 6-6. Fontenot had driven in the first run of the inning with a one-out double.

Corine Poncho followed Munoz with a two-run double down the line in right that bounced out of the glove of a diving Kinsley Gordon-Silvey just in fair territory. Maddie Taylor and Munoz raced home with the winning runs.

Still, things got close again in the bottom of the seventh as Southern Miss brought the winning run to the plate, but Taylor got Nealy McManus to fly out to center field for her first save.
