Detectives with the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations continue to investigate a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday in Sulphur and have identified the suspect as 29-year-old Laudrick Pate of Lake Charles.
Trooper Roy Jones said a deputy with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near U.S. 90 (E. Napoleon Street) and Willow Avenue in Sulphur. During the stop, Pate, the vehicle’s front passenger, fled from the traffic stop on foot.
After a brief foot pursuit, a deputy attempted to detain him, and a struggle ensued, Jones said.
“During the altercation, Pate gained control of the deputy’s TASER and deployed it at the deputy,” Jones said. “As a result, the deputy discharged their firearm and struck Pate.”
Pate was taken into custody and received medical aid before being transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. The deputy involved in the incident sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene.
This investigation remains ongoing, Jones said.
